Linux is an open-source operating system that was first released in 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Unix is a proprietary operating system that was originally developed by AT&T Bell Labs in the mid 1960s. The Linux kernel is monolithic, meaning that all of its services are provided by a single kernel.
